Updates from the Tinyverse - 23rd August 2021
It's been a busy couple of weeks since our last update but check out all the cool new stuff we’ve been up to!
Rune Core
Most of this release’s work has been on internal or closed-source items, but we’ve removed support for a couple of now-obsolete features in order to simplify the codebase and pay off technical debt.
The —capability flags (e.g. —capability image:person.png
) have been removed in favor of more user-friendly versions (e.g. —image person.png
) after emitting a warning for several versions.
We’ve also removed support for the now obsolete domain-specific language format for Runefiles. The rune
CLI will only work with the YAML format from version 0.6 onward.
Rune in the Browser
We’re still working out some of the bugs before publishing it to NPM, but the web runtime has been moved into the main hotg-ai/rune
repository.
ML and Use Cases
Developing on top of our multiple outputs/inputs work that allowed us to do style transfer, we have started work on handling multi-outputs and designing resource embeddings to support NLP. Our first multi-output rune is built on YAMNET which is an audio classification model that can predict 521 distinct events such as a child's laughter, a dog's barking, or an ambulance’s siren. Keep a look out for Audio and NLP Runes to come to the mobile app soon.
The Team
We’ve started our first engagement with Ferrous Systems, one of the most highly respected Rust engineering companies in the world. Let’s have a big shout-out to Jonas Schievink for developing a WASM3 backend for running Runes! Our open-source Rune is getting better and better each day.
We would like to welcome Jacek Pierzchlewski to the team. You’ll be seeing more from him as he joins Michael and Dinesh on the core platform.
Community
We want to send a big shout out to our community members! This week, we want to give two special shoutouts to Amin (UI/Mobile Designer) and Breno (Product Designer) for the amazing feedback they have given to our application and product. Amin reached out to our team directly, wanting to help us redesign our application, to help us simplify the user experience. Meanwhile, Breno gave us valuable feedback on our product; he went as far as creating a product deck for us. Is your mind blown? We are too! Do HOT-G have the best Open Source Community Members? We don’t just think so, we know so! C’mon, a round of applause for these two!
If you haven’t heard, we are officially sponsoring the biggest hackathon called Hack The North in Canada. We are rolling out something exciting this week to help the next generation level up.
